Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Appliance Recycling
Q – Are appliances sent to the landfill?
A – No. Oregon law requires that all large household appliances be recycled. The EPA estimates that nearly 8 million refrigerators and freezers are thrown away each year in the United States. The EPA also estimates that nearly 4 million pounds of ozone-depleting chemicals escape from appliances during disposal each year.
The Federal Government, Oregon and The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) require that appliances be recycled in Oregon in accordance with set standards to reduce effects to our environment.
Q – Do you pick up appliances for free? I’ve heard that some appliances are worth money because they are made of metal.
A – Mike and Dad’s Hauling does not pick up old appliances for free. Because of the strict regulations in Oregon regarding the proper disposal of household appliances, and because we are a Certified Environmentally Friendly Company we must pay to discard old appliances, just like all other environmentally responsible haulers.
We only use Recycling Centers that are Certified by the EPA to remove harmful chemicals from these appliances, such as Freon, thus protecting our environment for generations to come.
Q – How much of my old appliance is recycled?
A – Many materials in refrigerators and freezers and other household appliances can be recycled: metal, plastic, glass, refrigerant, oil and foam insulation. In fact, the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that approximately 95% of the materials can be recycled.
Refrigerators rely on refrigerants that contain ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or hydro-fluorocarbons (HFCs). Refrigerators manufactured before 1994 contain CFCs while those manufactured after 1994 contain the less harmful HFC. By 2003, all new refrigerators and freezers were manufactured without ozone-depleting compounds.
When large refrigerators and freezers are disassembled or repaired, the refrigerant can be released into the atmosphere. The Federal Clean Air Act prohibits individuals from knowingly venting ozone-depleting compounds. Mike and Dad’s Hauling uses Certified Recyclers to ensure this does not happen with any appliances we haul.
