How Much Do You Charge to Pick Up Old Appliances?
We don’t have a flat rate – a few different factors can affect pricing for appliance removal. If you would like a precise estimate, please give us a call – we’ll be happy to provide you with a free quote. If the appliance is easily accessible for us to load, our prices are very low.
Haul-away pricing depends on the following factors:
- Type of appliance that needs removal: Some appliances like refrigerators have extra protocols like freon removal before they can be processed. These make it more expensive to handle.
- Size, age, and weight of the appliance: Modern appliances use more lightweight materials, so they are easily removed. Older appliances can be shockingly heavy and difficult to remove.
- Are there stairs?
- Do we need to take down any doors, railings, or anything else to get your appliance out?
Are Old Appliances Sent to the Landfill?
No. It used to be the case that the end of an appliance’s life would see it sent to the landfill, but that’s not the case anymore. Oregon law now requires that all large household appliances be recycled, so that’s what we do.
This rule was put in place because old appliances can be quite polluting. The EPA estimates that nearly 8 million refrigerators and freezers are thrown away each year in the United States. The EPA also estimates that nearly 4 million pounds of ozone-depleting chemicals escape from appliances during disposal each year.

Appliance Recycling and Disposal FAQs
Many materials in refrigerators, freezers, and other household appliances can be recycled: metal, plastic, glass, refrigerant, oil, and even foam insulation. The EPA estimates that approximately 95% of materials in old appliances can be recycled.
Refrigerators rely on refrigerants that contain ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Refrigerators manufactured before 1994 contain CFCs while those manufactured after 1994 contain the less harmful HFC. By 2003, all new refrigerators and freezers were manufactured without ozone-depleting compounds.
When large refrigerators and freezers are disassembled or repaired, the refrigerant can be released into the atmosphere. The Federal Clean Air Act prohibits individuals from knowingly venting ozone-depleting compounds. Mike & Dad’s Hauling uses Certified Recyclers to ensure this does not happen with any appliances we haul.
No, we don’t pick up appliances for free. We get this question a lot because maybe you’ve heard that some appliances are worth money because they’re made of metal. While there may be some value in those recycled materials, it doesn’t begin to cover the cost of proper disposal, as mandated by the state of Oregon.
We are a certified Environmentally-Friendly Company and we must pay to discard old appliances, just like all other environmentally responsible haulers. We only use EPA-certified recycling centers with proper procedures for removing harmful chemicals, such as Freon, thus protecting our environment for generations to come.
